Kol Haruach Klezmer Band

ABOUTVIDEOSSONG LISTBOOK USTESTIMONIALSTRIO

ISRAELI | KLEZMER | RUSSIAN | ROCK

We are Klezmer musicians and seasoned Rock ’n’ Rollers as well. When we play a party, we perform with authority, enthusiasm and excitement. Playing a mix of Klezmer, Israeli, Swing, Jazz, and World music, we know how to get the party going and raise the roof. Our band knows how to read the crowd, and we know how to get the people up and dancing and having fun.

Your guests will remember your party for years to come, and they will thank you for making it so spectacular!

While Kol Haruach is renowned for Israeli and Klezmer music, we go out of our way to cater to other musical requests that you may have while planning your party. We can honor requests for the following styles: Pop, Swing, Funk, Jazz, Light Rock and Classic Rock.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

It all began with an impromptu performance at a party: In July of 2000 at the Lansing, Michigan Jazz festival Brian Choper, Holidaypic_2 an internationally known drummer, was asked at a moments notice, to sit in for a Go-go bands drummer who fell ill on stage. Brian had never played Go-go music before- the performance was for 40,000 people! Because he did such a great job the volunteers invited him to their “after” party for the Festival. Brian asked if he could bring a few friends. He brought 12 musicians with him.

The hosting hotel had provided a DJ to set the mood for the party. Brian approached the management with the idea of having his group of musician friends play instead. If you fill a room with musicians they will want to play together. After some discussion, they agreed, and some instruments were brought up from the storage trucks. As they were unloading instruments, an unaware night manger tried to stop them from playing, claiming they would make too much noise for the other hotel guests. Short a few pieces they played anyway. Brian ended up with only a snare and a bass drum. Jazz, Rock, show tunes and Folk music were played. They played for hours, late into the night. It was a true jam session at the highest level. When it was all over, this band of players, feeling the chemistry while they played, decided they were interested in forming a band.

Kol HaruachThe next morning sleepy, but enthusiastic, they discussed the jam session of the night before over coffee. The players discovered they had enough chemistry to make a band really work. Brian was unsure about the logistics of this arrangement, as these players were from all over the country, not local to any one town. However, it was agreed that if Brian took the lead and organized the shows, everyone would commit to the dates.
And with that “The Kol Haruach Orchestra” came to be. The Kol Haruach Orchestra, soon after changed their name to The Kol Haruach Klezmer Band. Kol Haruach means “Voice of the Spirit”, the irrepressible spirit and verve of any party.

GROWING WITH OUR MUSIC
Over the next year or so, the band played private affairs, all the while rehearsing to fine-tune their distinctive sound. Their sound was developing into a high level fusion of Klezmer and American jazz with Rock. The talent of the band was clear; the question was how to write or arrange the music to allow the players to shine . While they worked with Israeli, Klezmer, Jazz, Latin and Ladino music, they also wanted to experiment and compose their own repertoire. They began setting themselves apart from other bands by allowing band members to solo within the songs.

OUR CLIENTS COME FIRST

Whether we are performing for a party or in concert, our goal is to make your event the very best it can be. Our job is to delight and entertain your guests and make the party a wonderful, memorable occasion. When you have fun, we have fun!

Kol Haruach’s performance style has become its trademark; the Band chooses the appropriate style depending on the occasion of the performance or the atmosphere requested by the client. These include their Klezmer “hora” or energetic Jewish party style,israeli-medley their concert performance style where each musician takes turns soloing the melody; their Jazz style that shows off their playfulness with improvisational American Jazz and Swing, and their Rock & Roll, music that allows them to morf into a completely different band while still jamming in an improvisational manner…and the band is very good at it!

Wedding DanceThe hora (party) style is typically played at weddings and other Simchas. The Jazz is very classy and brings the band back to its roots, and the Rock & Roll obviously works just about anywhere where one wants to party down! Kol Haruach plays with improvisation and spontaneity – never arranged. Rock and Jazz are almost always requested and is mixed into the repertoire no matter where this Band plays.

Kol Haruach is a diverse group, and together some of our members also perform as a band called The Jazz Connection. This band plays Jazz standards from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. In fact, two of our members are world-renowned for their Jazz. So, if you’re planning a swanky, stylish event, or if you think background music would add atmosphere during the cocktail hour, just let us know and we’ll include it in our mix

DIVERSITY AND EXPERIENCE
We are experienced with both all Jewish and mixed events, we can mix it up…pull out the Jazz, Latin, Rock…and tie it all into the celebration. We even mix it up with the hora sets. And, if your guests are shy, or don’t know the Klezmer steps…not to worry. Our Clarinetist is a professional dance instructor who will step off the stage to teach everyone who wants to learn…right there on the dance floor. It’s easy. It’s fun. It’s a party for everyone!

A klezmer band that plays Jazz, Rock & Roll and more? We are far more flexible than most klezmer bands and can cater to your needs and tastes.

Kol HaruachObviously, we play Klezmer music. However, if you hire Kol Haruach to play for your party or event, you have the option of requesting more than just Klezmer music. The band can play Israeli, Swing, contemporary Jazz and we are very great at Rock & Roll. We are happy to include any or all of this in the mix for your party if you are interested, and we do it all the time. In fact, Kol Haruach is so well known for its long hora sets, Swing and Rock & Roll, at some events the band starts off with klezmer, but ends up performing more Swing and Rock than anything else.

If you enjoy Jazz or Rock & Roll and are interested in including some of this for your event, call us. You might also want to check out the Nexus Rock Band and their sound samples. Since many of our players also play in that band, the group could include Rock and Pop in the mix for your event, if you have the interest. (listen to sound samples from Nexus)

Kol Harauch In the Beginning- Bereshit

Kol Haruach released its’ first album in 2004, aptly named In the Beginning- Bereshit. It is a compilation of standards and new works written and arranged by the band. The album is typical of the band’s events and concerts, mixing improvisational jazz styling with Klezmer. Kol Haruach’s talents show best in its live shows so a second live recording was released in 2006, Kol Haruach – Live in Concert. This distinctive recording shows off the band’s Klezmer chops with Swing classics mixed in for a bit of fun. Both recordings were received with critical acclaim by critics and fans.

Our customers say it best:

– Meryl Weiner, Springfield, VA, July 2009

“Please also convey to the band how much we enjoyed the music. It was a tall order to go from klezmer to Israeli, to swing, to rock, but Kol Haruach pulled it off seamlessly. The music selections were so varied that everyone at the wedding found something they could dance to – as you saw, the large dance floor was full to the brim with our guests. We got so many compliments on the band’s excellent musicianship and on the vocalists.
Thank you so much for your attention to detail and to our needs! ”

Francis Kirschler

Charleston, South Carolina
“Your band was wonderful. In fact, it was so good, we actually left 3 times. We had to go, so we left, but as we got to the parking lot, we could still hear the party and the music in the distance. The music was so good, we put stuff in the car, turned around and went back, staying for about half an hour. This went on two more times until basically, the party was over. We ended up leaving with everyone else. As I said, you guys were great. You were awesome!”

Mira Leiberman

Pittsburgh, PA
“You guys are amazing. I expected a hora set. I didn’t expect the crowd to be dancing for fifty-five minutes! What a pleasant surprise. And you knew how to mix it up between the Jewish and the Jazz and the Rock. The Jazz was fantastic, really kicking-and you were not too loud. My parents were so worried, but by the end of the evening, they were just having fun dancing with the music-everyone was having fun. You made the party!”

Anna Elashvili,

Brooklyn, NY
“Kol Haruach was a pleasure to work with and sounded great at my wedding. For any musicians getting married that want to do something special, the band did a great job playing along with my husband and me as well as my niece who sang with them…impromptu! We gave them the music and just went for it and it was a highlight of the evening! Thanks guys!!”

Steve Gordon & Haley Crittenden Gordon

Alexandria, VA
“We had a blast at our wedding! Thank you and Kol Haruach for making our wedding fun and lively! Our guests had a great time dancing…people told us that they thought the band was great. Please use us as a reference. Your band is very professional, lively and has a lot of energy.
Your band will always have a special place in my heart…”

Beth Elson

“Dear Brian,

You guys were great! The hora sets were especially memorable, and our friends had a terrific time. Even more gratifying was a letter I got from my grandmother, in which she wrote:

“Where did you ever find that band? It had everything– something for everyone. No one could just sit in their chair all afternoon– there was a ‘spirit’, a ‘joie de vie’ that was unmatched in all my experience….”

…and that’s 85 years worth of experience! Beth (the bride) similarly felt that the wedding fulfilled her dream of everyone dancing the whole time. Any band that pleases a crowd from ages 3 to 85 is something really special.

Thanks so much,”

Larry Black

“Outstanding! The best Klezmer music we’ve heard. You made the party.”

Cara Lanza

“Your band was excellent! You played a variety of music, all extremely well. Not your ordinary band. I will be referring you.”

“Kol Haruach was a huge hit at our wedding. We appreciated the variety
— jazz, swing, klezmer — and your sound was incredible. We were also amazed by your infectious enthusiasm. We were thrilled that you were able to get so many guests to their feet and dancing! Thanks for making our wedding so much fun. Again, thanks for your wonderful music and your infectious enthusiasm — it really contributed to everyone having fun.”

“Hi Brian,
I want to thank you and the Kol Haruach Orchestra for providing us and our guests with a very special and memorable performance at Tamar and Frank’s wedding last week. Each and every one of you contribute both virtuosity and ruach. The group is aptly named. Everyone at the wedding, family and guests, bride and groom, young and old, musicians and fans, loved listening and dancing to your music. As a big fan of klezmer, I look forward to following your career as you move on to great prominence in the klezmer world.
Thanks for everything. Happy healthy and prosperous New Year to all.
Best regards.”

Sharon Siedel

“They didn’t have to use ear plugs as they often do. They love to dance to all kinds of music. The kids-(the friends of the bride and groom) heard everything they had requested and got all the Jewish music I was looking forward to!
You are all such talented musicians. I plan on using you again.
P.S. I wanted to let you know how we and all our guests totally loved the music. It was everything you promised and more. The proof is that everyone was dancing nonstop-even those that we feared might not!
We were aiming for an atmosphere of elegance and Freilach, and you helped us achieve both. My parents and our other Sr. guests- were so thrilled!”

Dianne Boyer

Silver Spring, MD
“I would like to thank the members of Kol Haruach Klezmer Band for the phenomenal concert at Mishkan Torah on May 9, 2004. The music selection was very exciting and renewed many happy memories of Klezmer music. The group’s professional skills are incredible, each musician and the singer perform at the highest level. The introductions shared the humor and the love of the music you presented to us. I would give the highest recommendation to all who are considering engaging your group for a performance or special event. It is indeed One of The Most Enjoyable groups I have ever heard perform. Keep up the wonderful music!”

Angie Carmel

Beltsville, MD
“…just wanted you to know that Leah and I really enjoyed the concert… Mishkan Torah people are still talking about how wonderful it was. Thanks again for what you did.”

The Kol Haruach Three Piece Band

Our Klezmer Trio and 3 Piece Band

On a budget, but looking for a Klezmer band for your wedding, Bar Mitzvah or party? The Kol Haruach Klezmer Band has your solution. Try our 3 Piece Band. Everyone knows that on average, the smaller the ensemble, the lower the cost, and anyone can provide a trio. But, how will that sound at your party, and will it get people up and dancing when you want them dancing? In other words, will it actually work at your party? Well, Kol Haruach has looked at this issue, and came up with an awesome solution, our 3 piece band.

Klezmer Trio

Klezmer Trio

Yes, this is still an ensemble consisting of three players, so it is still technically a trio….but not really. While your typical trio only provides the energy of three pieces, we’ve figured out a way of zipping it up to make it work with more energy…..band energy.

Since the band includes such diverse and flexible players, by adding a modified PA system to the show and adjusting what we play and how we play it, you should hear a very different sound, one that takes the typical lounge trio and converts it into a dance/Klezmer/Israeli band…at a VERY affordable price.
