Javi was born in Miami, Florida, but raised in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, part of greater San Juan. He discovered singing in college. Ironically he was studying chemical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez, which is about as far away from the performing arts as you can get. He never expected to be singing as a career move- never even saw it coming. Well, here’s how it all happened!

After college he joined a touring choir (directed by a friend who also happened to be a professional organist). It was discovered at that time that he had this raw talent as an accapella and falsetto singer. In fact, he was excellent and began soloing with the group. As his skills expanded, he began to get noticed, and the entire choir began receiving requests to perform all over the world, even winning a few prizes with them while on tour. However, after two years, he felt it time to move on.

His first secular performance was with a wedding band/party band music agency local to Washington, DC. Javi was introduced to their bands, but like most of these music agencies, they only managed sequenced groups. So although he was singing, he was unable to experience and learn the art of performing with musicians who were trained to follow his vocal lead. Instead, he learned how to sing along with bands that used prerecorded music tracks (sequencing). As with anything he touches, he became excellent at this. He sang at weddings, country clubs and corporate parties, staying with them for nearly two years. Of that time Javi says, “I’ll never forget the first time I sang the first dance at a wedding (it was “You and Me” by Lifehouse and it was my second gig!). That was quite a thrill!”

While there he met and began working with Laurie Riggins and JRay, (all whom have since moved and signed with Washington’s Entertainment Connection). Up until that point, he had been skilled at either sequenced, karaoke or choir singing, where the words were always comfortably in front of him. Laurie Riggins introduced him to WEC. After signing with the agency and working with them for only a short time, he discovered that WEC’s professionals could help him reach the next level as a performer- coaching him to sing with a real band, with live musicians! His time with his old agency helped him grow as a performer in a limited way. Now with WEC — he is singing with a real band, no sequenced music allowed, harmonizing with the other singers, with all the lyrics memorized!

Now with Thunder & Lightning, WEC’s top show band, this natural talent has blossomed as an out front singer and wowing crowds! He is available to perform at weddings, corporate events, galas, private parties as a singer, DJ and MC. Call 301-441-8899 to book Javi today!
